Circus: 250 Years Young
Circus: 250 Years Young was a 9-month creative heritage project funded by Heritage Lottery Fund Youth Roots grant programme and led by NoFit State Circus. The project gave its talented Youth Circus an opportunity to connect with Wales' unique contribution to the development of circus over the past 250 years and culminated in a final performance as part of the UK-wide celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of circus in 2018.
Working with heritage partners Glamorgan Archives, NoFit State’s youth circus explored and discovered Wales’ lost circus history; scouring the archives, taking talks from circus experts, and even experiencing practical workshops in forgotten circus skills from professional performers and circus experts.
The end-of-project show, which took place in December 2017, brought together the long-lost stories interwoven with rediscovered circus skills to present an exciting new show directed by storyteller, clown and circus performer Francis Maxey.
The project was also a chance for the youth troupe to learn new digital skills, as they worked closely with creative organisation ProMo-Cymru to create a documentary of their experiences - to be premiered at a special showing for the community in February 2018.
